The Secret to Building a World-Class Company
By James Palmer
Building a successful, world-class company is like assembling a complex puzzle. Of course, you need the right product or service, creative marketing, and competitive pricing. But what is the one key element that often gets overlooked? World-class employees. Without them, all the other pieces may not fall into place.
While attracting top talent is critical, keeping that talent is even more important. High employee turnover can be devastating to a business, both financially and culturally. The costs go beyond a higher salary or bonuses — it includes recruiting, on-boarding, and training, not to mention the lost opportunities that come from vacant roles. Studies consistently show that what draws employees to your company often isn’t what convinces them to stay.
After 8 years in recruitment and being in leadership positions, I've learned what truly attracts top performers and, more importantly, what keeps them engaged. I’ll admit, I had to learn the hard way as a hiring manager, especially after losing a few great employees. That experience drove me to focus on learning as much as I could through exit interviews.
So how can companies win at both attracting and retaining talent? Here’s what I know.
What Attracts New Employees
When it comes to talent acquisition, candidates often look at immediate benefits. These perks entice them to sign on the dotted line:
- Higher Base Salary & Bonuses
Money talks! A competitive salary and incentive structure are almost always at the top of the list for most of my candidates. - Better Benefits & Perks
Health benefits, retirement plans, and life conveniences (like wellness programs or meal stipends) can tip the scale. - Workplace Flexibility
Hybrid or remote options, along with flexible hours, have become a big attraction post-pandemic. Employees value work-life balance more than ever. - Title Elevation
A lot of candidates tell me that a title that reflects career progression can mean the difference between rejecting an offer and signing on the dotted line. - Shorter Commute
Time spent commuting is time away from family and personal life. Candidates increasingly tell me the value of close proximity, or hybrid options.
While these factors are important, they are just the starting point. After all, signing a contract is one thing; ensuring employees stay engaged and loyal is another challenge altogether.
What Keeps Employees on Your Team
Once you’ve attracted top talent, the real work begins: keeping them. Here’s what helps keep your team happy and motivated for the long haul:
- Career Growth Opportunities
Top performers are ambitious. They need to see a path for growth. Employees who feel stuck are more likely to look elsewhere. Provide clear progression plans and opportunities for advancement. Communication is the key. I always liked to connect with my employees on a more formal basis at least once a quarter to discuss how everything is going and is it aligned to career ambitions. - Clear Goals & Objectives
It’s essential that employees know what’s expected of them on a daily basis. Ambiguity breeds frustration. Ensure roles are clearly defined and regularly reviewed. - Regular Feedback
Regular, constructive feedback helps employees improve and feel valued. Make time for performance reviews, but also offer informal feedback consistently. - Recognition
A simple “thank you” or formal recognition goes a long way. When employees feel seen, their loyalty grows. Recognize achievements both big and small, and celebrate the wins! I like to try and find people doing things right and offer informal praise. - Strong Manager Relationships
Employees don’t quit companies; they quit managers. Building trust between managers and their direct reports is critical to retention. - Healthy Coworker Relationships
Employees who feel a sense of camaraderie are more likely to stay. Social events, team-building exercises, and collaborative workspaces can help build strong internal relationships.
Why Retention Matters More Than Ever
Many companies have strong hiring strategies but fail to focus on retention. This oversight can lead to costly turnover and a revolving door of talent. Creating a culture that supports both attraction and retention strategies is vital for long-term success.
Company culture also plays an important role in retention. Employees want to work for companies that align with their values and offer an inclusive, supportive environment. While salary and benefits may draw them in, the culture and day-to-day experience are what truly makes them stay.
